On 7 March 2017, ICHCAP and the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) signed a memorandum of understanding concerning their cooperative efforts to co-organize the 2017 Southeast Asian collaborative meeting on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, which is set to be held in Penang later this year.

Dr. Ming Chee Ang, the general manager of GTWHI, presented a paper outlining the activities of her organization. GTWHI works with local communities to overcome challenges related to promoting sustainable tourism and revitalizing traditional trades. Through the George Town Heritage Celebrations, which are held annually, GTWHI strives to engage inner-city residents and visitors to safeguard George Town’s local culture and heritage assets.

Through this MOU, ICHCAP and GTWHI will endeavor to build a cooperative relationship to help create an environment conducive to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific region for the sustainable development of local communities.
