George Town Heritage Celebrations 2019

The annual community-driven George Town Heritage Celebrations returns this year from 6 – 8 July 2019 to mark the 11th anniversary of George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Themed Let’s Celebrate – Rituals and Festive Events, it will give celebration-goers the opportunity of firsthand experience in our living traditions.

The theme highlights George Town as a diverse, living heritage city, with rituals and festive events such as the commemoration of traditional and cultural events, birth celebrations, wedding ceremonies, and major celebrations to honour deities, that are still being practised and celebrated today.

It also features the people of George Town who continue to live in harmonious coexistence through the understanding of multicultural traditions that have been passed down through generations despite the differences in ethnic and culture.

On 6 July 2019, the Street Festival will take place from 6pm to 11pm in the inner city of George Town. The curation of programmes together with the local community will centre on their rituals and festive events, and encompass interactive activities such as workshops, demonstrations, performances, and games.

The site excursions to seven locations are from 6 – 8 July 2019, in which participants will have the chance to enrich and broaden their knowledge on the various culture and traditions from the historical religious sites that they will be visiting.
