As the latest addition to the family, Atikah constantly learns from the team on how best to manage, conserve, safeguard, and promote the cultural heritage of George Town. Her training in Anthropology at Universiti Sains Malaysia instilled her fervid curiosity for culture. As an aspiring anthropologist with one foot in the field of arts and cultural heritage and another in urban development and placemaking, she literally stands in both fields by living, working and walking the streets of George Town. She joined Arts-ED as a project coordinator after her graduation in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (majoring in Anthropology and Sociology). Her stint with this local arts and culture organisation provided her with professional experience including design and facilitation of arts and culture education programmes, conducting cultural mapping studies for site rejuvenation planning, as well as consultations. Atikah is also the 2019 alumni of CrossCulture Programme - Fellowship for Professionals by Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, Germany in which she assisted the curation and programme design at Japanisches Palais of Staatliche Kuntsamlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections). Atikah enjoys indulging in prose and still images, as well as wandering in museums and galleries, landscapes and alleys in between times, somewhat like a manifestation of a flâneur who transcends across different spaces. VIRAJITHA CHIMALAPATI

Conservation Architect | vira[at]gtwhi[dot]com[dot]my

Virajitha Chimalapati is Conservation Architect with George Town World Heritage Incorporated, with a master’s degree in Architecture (Architectural Conservation). She is responsible for leading conservation, evaluation, restoration and monitoring efforts on built heritage in the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. Virajitha hails from India, and for the past 10 years, has worked primarily with the documentation and restoration of historic built fabric. She has been based in Penang for the past five years, where her interest has moved to looking at shared histories, urban identities and placemaking amongst cities and countries that share a common colonial past. She believes that understanding the past, the processes that led to current decision making and the involvement of the community in defining and taking ownership of their own spaces are the only way to design a sustainable future. In short, Virajitha is a ‘super’ in the making, saving the world one story, one building, and one memory at a time.

Traditional Street Names of George Town

Paperback | 164 pages | English

Publisher: George Town World Heritage Incorporated

Year Published: 2015

In the historic city of George Town, while one trishaw rider is being directed to 'Lean Hwa Ho' - the 'stream of the lotus flowers', a taxi is being directed to 'Nyior Cabang' - the 'row of coconut trees', both passengers actually wish to go to Leith Street, which now has neither lotus flowers nor coconut trees. As the 'street of stonemasons' or 'Pak Cheok Kay' or Acheen Street embraces its last few actual stonemasons, this publication seeks to document the delightful wealth of oral history in the form of local references used over the last 200 years to refer to our streets by occupations, trades, activities and local personalities. These references were not only useful and pertinent, often they were droll and witty. Sometimes puns were used, occasionally they were even risqué. The historical significance of these traditional names was so valued that the first compilation appeared in 1900. This latest one features 118 streets within the George Town World Heritage Site and beyond, and attempts to put together the recollections of the dwindling residents of the inner city.

TIEH KOK YANG

Events Management Officer | kokyang[at]gtwhi[dot]com[dot]my

Tieh Kok Yang ventured into events management after realising he would not make it as a cinematographer. Now as Events Management Officer with George Town World Heritage Incorporated, Kok Yang works on the planning, managing, marketing, and reporting of the organisation’s events. He was Producer for George Town Heritage Celebrations 2018, and has assumed the role again for George Town Heritage Celebrations 2019. Kok Yang received his bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media from University of Southern Queensland in 2012, before kickstarting his career in coordinating and executing events and projects in the northern region of Malaysia for three years. While travelling to work one day, Kok Yang concluded that events management and film production are similar in that both fields require creative strategies to engage audiences, effective solutions, systematic project management, and adaptability to ever-changing working environments, with the end product being the only difference. He continues to improve himself by managing heritage related projects, and enjoys watching films in his free time.
