GEORGE TOWN HERITAGE HABITAT SEED FUND
The George Town Heritage Habitat Seed Fund is an initiative by the State Government of Penang, together with George Town World Heritage Incorporated to safeguard the cultural heritage of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With RM3mil in seed funding from the State Government of Penang, the programme will aid participating owners of heritage buildings in the World Heritage Site who are hosting long-term tenants to repair and restore their heritage buildings, in exchange for long-term tenancy at subsidised rent.
The programme was launched on 24 November 2018, with at least 10 Category II heritage premises involved in the pilot phase of the project, in which repair and restoration works will begin in 2019. Category II buildings make up the majority of George Town’s built cultural landscape, of which the occupants are residents and the living heritage contributing to the city’s Outstanding Universal Values.
Successful owner applicants will receive the seed funding to cover the expenses of materials and professional fees for the physical repair and restoration works of their premises. The participating tenants will also be able to look forward to having their tenanted living environment upgraded and tenancy agreement secured for at least five years with negotiated rent.
