Salun Hwang I Care Hwang I Care Saloon 黃聰照祖傳洗眼睛店 Information in English Maklumat dalam Bahasa Malaysia 中文資訊 About the Business In the 1930s, Mr Ooi Cheong Cheow founded a barber shop in Perak Road, Jelutong after migrating from China to reside on the Penang island. Apart from barber services, the shop also provided traditional eye, ear, and nose cleaning services. After Mr Ooi Cheong Cheow passed away, his son, Mr Ooi Ah Joo inherited the business and continued the family legacy for over 60 years, providing traditional eyelid cleaning services as well. Mr Ooi Ah Joo’s family, including his granddaughter, Ms Ooi Poh Mei, will help at the barber shop during peak hours. Ms Ooi had learnt the cleaning skill from her grandfather out of curiosity, and eventually became the only one in her generation to master the difficult technique of flipping the inner eyelids for cleaning. After her grandfather’s death in 2006, with encouragement from her mother, Madam Koay Ah Sim, Ms Ooi decided to run the business under her great-grandfather’s name, “Ooi Cheong Cheow”. Currently, Ms Ooi Poh Mei operates Hwang I Care Saloon in George Town, Penang. The shop still uses the classic barber chair passed down by her great-grandfather. Customers will sit and relax in the chair, and Ms Ooi places a warm towel over their eyes before starting the cleaning process. The herbal concoction that she uses for the eye cleaning is a mixture of traditional medicinal herbs and medicinal Chinese ink. Their regular customers usually go for the 15-minute eye care services. Read more Kedai Biskut Ng Kee Kenali Perniagaan Encik Ooi Cheong Cheow memulakan perniagaan gunting rambut di Jalan Perak, Jelutong pada tahun 1930 selepas berhijrah dari China ke Pulau Pinang. Selain perkhidmatan menggunting rambut, kedai ini juga menyediakan perkhidmatan tradisional mencuci mata, telinga dan hidung. Selepas Encik Ooi Cheong Cheow meninggal dunia, anak lelaki beliau iaitu Encik Ooi Ah Joo mewarisi perniagaan tersebut selama lebih 60 tahun. Beliau turut mengembangkan kemahiran mencuci mata yang tradisional ini. Encik Ooi Ah Joo turut dibantu oleh ahli keluarga termasuklah cucu beliau, Cik Ooi Poh Mei ketika kedai gunting rambut sedang sibuk. Pada mulanya, Cik Ooi mempelajari kemahiran mencuci mata daripada datuknya hanya kerana berasa ingin tahu tetapi akhirnya menjadi satu-satunya pewaris generasi yang berjaya menguasai teknik membalikkan kelopak mata yang sukar. Selepas Encik Ooi Ah Joo meninggal dunia pada tahun 2006, Cik Ooi meneruskan perniagaan tradisional tersebut dengan nama moyang beliau, “Ooi Cheong Cheow” di bawah dorongan ibunya, Puan Koay Ah Sim. Kini, Cik Ooi Poh Mei mengendalikan Salun Hwang I Care di dalam kawasan Tapak Warisan Dunia George Town yang masih mengguna pakai kerusi gunting rambut klasik yang diwarisi sejak zaman moyang beliau. Setelah pelanggan duduk di kerusi gunting rambut, Cik Ooi akan menenangkan mata mereka dengan tuala hangat, kemudian barulah beliau memulakan perkhidmatan mencuci mata. Ramuan herba untuk pembersihan mata disediakan dengan campuran ramuan perubatan tradisional dan juga dakwat perubatan Cina. Pelanggan yang datang biasanya pelanggan tetap yang akan mencuci mata secara berkala selama 15 minit.
