The biggest challenge for the members of Ombak Potehi is that they are not fluent in the traditional Hokkien dialect; and are unable to perform traditionally, which is in a more spontaneous manner. Therefore, they have shortened the three hour performances to concised 30 to 45 minute versions, in addition, they produce musical transcription and written dialogues so that the younger generation who are interested in this art can learn it with ease. Mr Ooi Lay Peng, originally from Hokkien, China, founded Jin Lan Ge, and when the troupe was passed down to his son, Mr Ooi Ah Goh, the name was changed to Ming Feng Ge. Madam Ooi Siew Kim, the daughter of Mr Ooi Ah Goh, later took over the company, which was then taken over by her sister, Madam Ooi See Han, and the troupe's name was changed to Beng Geok Hong. They have been using the same glove puppets, musical instruments, and equipment for two generations. Beng Geok Hong's members are mostly in their 60s and 70s, and most of them have been in the industry since they were young, therefore they are able to play a variety of characters and musical instruments even without a script or musical score. The troupe is made up of four members who are skilled in manipulating glove puppets, singing, playing drums, Suona (Chinese Trumpet), and gongs. Beng Geok Hong is often invited to perform not only in Penang, but also in Kedah, Perak, and other states in the country. They are generally asked to perform glove puppets for prayer ceremonies that last for a few days during the lunar calendar's second, seventh, and ninth month.
