The business has been operating for more than 100 years. They ventured into the business of prayer paraphernalias during World War II. Guan Seng Hin was previously run by the shop founder’s son Mr Lim Kim Hee and his wife Madam Poh Lean Ho, who passed down the shop to their daughter-in-law, Madam Koay Yam Choo. During the height of their business, they even had their own factory, which was located on Lorong Pasar, to manufacture products in large quantities. Their products were even exported to Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and other countries. Due to the limited space available to dry their incense under the sun, they then relocated the factory to Butterworth. Currently, Guan Seng Hin’s most popular product is the handmade ingot shaped incense. The main ingredient to produce this is natural sandalwood powder, without any artificial essence. After mixing the sandalwood with some water, Madam Koay pours the mixture into moulds which make the ingot shapes. They are then dried under the sun for a few days. The incense will release a pleasant smell when lit. Apart from incense, Guan Seng Hin also sells various types of candles, as well as joss paper prayer items.
