Mr Ooi Lay Peng, originally from Hokkien, China, founded Jin Lan Ge, and when the troupe was passed down to his son, Mr Ooi Ah Goh, the name was changed to Ming Feng Ge. Madam Ooi Siew Kim, the daughter of Mr Ooi Ah Goh, later took over the company, which was then taken over by her sister, Madam Ooi See Han, and the troupe's name was changed to Beng Geok Hong. They have been using the same glove puppets, musical instruments, and equipment for two generations. Beng Geok Hong's members are mostly in their 60s and 70s, and most of them have been in the industry since they were young, therefore they are able to play a variety of characters and musical instruments even without a script or musical score. The troupe is made up of four members who are skilled in manipulating glove puppets, singing, playing drums, Suona (Chinese Trumpet), and gongs. Beng Geok Hong is often invited to perform not only in Penang, but also in Kedah, Perak, and other states in the country. They are generally asked to perform glove puppets for prayer ceremonies that last for a few days during the lunar calendar's second, seventh, and ninth month. Therefore, they have shortened the three hour performances to concised 30 to 45 minute versions, in addition, they produce musical transcription and written dialogues so that the younger generation who are interested in this art can learn it with ease. The troupe has kept over a hundred pieces of glove puppets, props, and musical instruments since the day the troupe was established; all of which are still being used today. As they have a variety of glove puppets, they are able to put on a great show for clients regardless of the story requested. They have the puppets required for shows about family, battles, or thanksgiving to deities. The troupe has performed more than a hundred stories. Aunty Kiao has a notebook in which she writes down the stories that have been performed for each client, to ensure that they do not repeat the same stories in the future. The troupe members are familiar with all the stories in their collection. They are able to begin a performance immediately, just by listening to the troupe leader calling out the title of the story. The drummers and puppeteers are in sync and they know when to start and stop a performance without verbal instructions from the troupe leader. Every year, Xin Kim Hong receives invitations from organisations and temples to perform all over Malaysia, including Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, and Johor. Aunty Kiao is delighted with the support from clients over the years. For her, puppet shows are not mainly performed to sustain their business or generate income, but they are a valuable performing art with cultural significance. Although it is unclear what the future holds for this art form, Aunty Kiao intends to do her best in carrying on the tradition. Besides glove puppetry, the troupe is also preserving the art of Hokkien string puppetry. The demand for string puppet shows is rare, as it is only needed when there is a new temple. After Mr. Ng moved to Butterworth, Penang, the troupe began to perform actively in the northern region. After the passing of Mr. Ng Yak Sin, the troupe was inherited by his son, Mr. Ng Hock Chai. He joined the troupe as a member of the backstage crew when he was 18 years old. During his time with the troupe, he learnt to play various musical instruments. In recent years, as Mr. Ng Hock Chai has gotten older, he gradually handed over the leadership of the troupe to his nephew, Mr. Ng Chong Yeong. Mr. Ng Chong Yeong spent most of his childhood days with the troupe, and now plays the role of band leader. Back in the old days, each troupe member was able to play a multitude of traditional music instruments, such as gong, cymbals, drum, “khok wa” (southern wood block), ‘tik tik” (small wooden block) and many more. Ombak Potehi 破浪布袋戲 Information in English Maklumat dalam Bahasa Malaysia 中文資訊 About the Business Ombak Potehi is one of the bodies under Ombak-Ombak ARTStudio established by Dr Tan Sooi Beng, Professor of Ethnomusicology Universiti Sains Malaysia, in 2015, with the aim of promoting art through performances, festivals, exhibitions and workshops. Ombak Potehi members consist of youths with an average age of 30 years old. Due to their passion in Potehi (Glove Puppet Theatre), they study and aim to master the skills required with hopes of promoting and keeping the art alive for the future generations. The group learns and receives guidance from Beng Geok Hong Potehi Troupe on acting techniques, playing accompaniment music, dialogue and manipulating hand puppets.. The biggest challenge for the members of Ombak Potehi is that they are not fluent in the traditional Hokkien dialect; and are unable to perform traditionally, which is in a more spontaneous manner. Therefore, they have shortened the three hour performances to concised 30 to 45 minute versions, in addition, they produce musical transcription and written dialogues so that the younger generation who are interested in this art can learn it with ease. Since the establishment of Ombak Potehi two years’ ago, they have regularly performed 2 stories, which are “A long road tests a horse’s strength; and a long task proves a person’s heart” and “Journey to the West- Avalokitesvara Conquers The Red Boy”. From 2017, they began to incorporate local elements into their performances, such as their creation "The Tales of Penang", which is set against the history of Penang and its multiracial community.
