About the Business
Teck Ban Choon Foundry is located in Armenian Street, George Town. It was established in the 1900s, and is currently run by the third generation, Mr Teoh Huah Guan. Mr Teoh learnt the skills required to be a blacksmith at the age of 18 and took over the business in his 20s.
The foundry produces iron parts and anchors for fishing vessels. Customers get to choose the anchors according to their preference. The anchors produced by the foundry weigh between 3kg and 200kg, and vary from one to five claws.
One can master the skill of anchor making with just a few years of practice. Much effort goes into anchor making, including physical strength, eyesight, timing, and focus, especially when controlling the flames. If mistakes are made during the heating, forging or welding process, all the hard work will be lost and one shall have to start over.
Mr Teoh always incorporates new ideas for a more efficient process. He casts moulds for handmade anchors so that the measurements will always be consistent. With years of experience in this field, he is able to advise customers on the types of anchors suitable for their ships or vessels.
Customers of Teck Ban Choon Foundry are usually fishermen and port operators from Penang, Kedah, Perlis, and Perak. Other types of ironware for ships, farms, and construction are also available in the foundry.

Teck Ban Choon ialah sebuah bengkel besi yang terletak di Gat Lebuh Armenian, George Town. Bengkel ini diasaskan sekitar tahun 1900dan kini diuruskan oleh Encik Teoh Huah Guan, pewaris generasi ketiga. Beliau mempelajari teknik membuat alatan besi daripada ayahnya sejak berumur 18 tahun lalu mengambil alih perniagaan ini pada umur 20-an.
Bengkel ini menghasilkan sauh dan alatan besi untuk kapal nelayan, para pelanggan boleh memilih sauh yang bersesuaian mengikut keperluan masing-masing. Sauh yang dijual di sini seberat 3 hingga 20 kg dan mempunyai 1 hingga 5 batang besi sebagai pilihan.
Kemahiran membuat sauh hanya dapat dikuasai sepenuhnya selepas latihan selama beberapa tahun. Ia menguji kekuatan tenaga, ketajaman penglihatan dan sikap ketelitian. Api, tenaga dan masa perlu dikawal dengan baik. Jika terdapat sebarang kesilapan dalam proses pemanasan, penempaan ataupun pengimpalan, ia perlu dibuat semula.
Encik Teoh sentiasa mencari idea baharu untuk meningkatkan kecekapan pembuatan sauh. Beliau telah mencipta acuan yang berlainan isi padu supaya sauh buatan tangannya lebih halus dan jitu. Dengan pengalaman selama berpuluh-puluh tahun, Encik Teoh dapat memberikan cadangan kepada pelanggan beliau tentang jenis dan berat sauh yang sesuai dihasilkan berdasarkan muatan kapal, keadaan laut dan perairan.
Selain Pulau Pinang, Bengkel Besi Teck Ban Choon turut menerima tempahan pelanggan dari Kedah, Perlis, Perak dan lain-lain negari. Alatan besi yang diperlukan untuk kapal, ladang, rumah dan pembinaan juga boleh didapatkan di bengkel ini.

德萬春鐵廠
簡介
位於喬治市本頭公巷路頭的德萬春鐵廠，是一家鑄造船錨和鐵製工具的打鐵舖。德萬春創辦於1900年代，現由第三代傳人張華源先生經營。出生於1948年的張先生，自18歲開始就跟隨父親學習打鐵手藝，並在二十多歲時接手生意至今。
目前，德萬春主要鑄造遠洋漁船使用的鐵器和船錨，顧客可以根據需求選擇適合的船錨。德萬春備有3公斤至200公斤、一個錨爪至五個錨爪的船錨供顧客選擇。鑄造船錨非常講究技術，而其技藝需要經過好幾年的磨練才能完全掌握。鑄造船錨考驗的是體力、眼力、和一顆細膩的心。師傅們必須把火候，力度和時機都拿捏得剛剛好，因為若在加熱、鍛打、焊接的過程中有絲毫的差錯，就需要重新做過。
張先生在過去的幾十年裡，一邊打鐵，一邊構思讓鑄造過程更有效的方法。他研發了各種體積的模具，好讓手製的船錨更加精準。累積了多年經驗後，張先生可以根據船隻的體積，再把海況和水域納入考量，向顧客建議適合的產品類型和重量。
德萬春的顧客不僅來自檳城，吉打、玻璃市、霹靂等州屬的漁村和港口業者也來此訂購船錨。店裡也售賣船用的鐵器、園坵與家用刀斧以及建築鐵棒等。
